Thin wires for a temporary pacemaker are attached to the surface of the heart to correct any irregular heartbeats which may occur after the heart-lung bypass machine is stopped.

The pacemaker will stay with the patient in the coronary intensive care unit until the surgeon is satisfied that it is no longer needed.
